When Camilla and Lisbeth were children, they were both physically and sexually abused by their father, Alexander Zalachenko , until Lisbeth decided to run away. Lisbeth begged Camilla to come with her, but when Camilla refused, Lisbeth escaped on her own, leaving Camilla behind.

Zalachenko abused and tortured her until she was 16, by which time the abuse had turned her into a monster; unlike the asocial but basically decent Lisbeth, Camilla is amoral, sadistic, and violent - very much her father's daughter. Shortly after Zalachenko's death, Camilla faked her own suicide and went underground to form "The Spiders" from the ashes of her father's criminal empire. From that day on, Lisbeth believed Camilla to be dead.

Camilla's goal is to get her hands on a top secret program called "Firefall", designed for the National Security Agency, that allows access to the world's nuclear codes once unlocked.

Lisbeth is hired to retrieve Firefall by a computer programmer named Frans Balder, and although she succeeds in doing this, she is unable to unlock it, and the program is then stolen by Camilla's henchmen. After managing to escape with her life, Lisbeth delves deeper into the conspiracy and learns of "The Spiders" organization, as well as the fact that Camilla is alive and the one leading the syndicate.

Lisbeth later tracks Camilla to her base of operations at their childhood home , where Camilla attempts to acquire the password to unlock Firefall by threatening to torture Lisbeth's former lover Mikael Blomkvist. Camilla then wraps Lisbeth in a rubber coating to suffocate her, all the while telling her the details of how she suffered at the hands of their abusive father.
