Re: Reforging a Broken Sword Blade Assuming a good interlocking forge weld, you'd lose about 1" per break of steel, I figure, because you'd need a decent steel overlap.
You could draw out the thickened area a bit, but still prior to the weld you'd need to do some grinding on the broken ends to clean them up in preparation. As to whether said blade would be useable afterwards- is another story, but you'd always have some trace of the weld. I've seen reforged broken blades from the 19th century that were very profesionally done- but you can still see the join.
Posts Forgive my ignorance But what if the blade were broken, or cut up and re-forged to the billet stage and then forged into a sword again. I mean I know that in a way you are just forging a new sword, but in the story this was taken from, this may have been a viable alternative. Would there still be large loss of steel?
