When the larvae hatch, they feed on the tree and secrete an irritant. As they grow, they provide shelter and food to the larvae until they reach maturity and are able to chew their way out.

To preserve as much of the tannin as possible, galls were harvested preferably before the insect had become an adult and made its way out. They are small, heavy, and dark in color.
